CALL FOR PAPERS: South Asia Conference of the Pacific Northwest (SACPAN) at UBC

The Centre for India and South Asia Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in partnership with the Departments of Asian Studies and History and IC-IMPACTS, invites paper proposals for the annual South Asia Conference of the Pacific Northwest (SACPAN), a long-running collaborative venture sponsored by the University of Washington, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Oregon. We welcome scholars from across the disciplines with research interests in South Asia at these and all other universities and colleges in the area.
If you are a scholar or graduate student (Master’s or Ph.D.) working on research related to South Asia across all time periods and disciplinary approaches, we welcome your proposal. This year we hope to hold targeted sessions on technology and resources, and indigenous issues, and particularly welcome proposals along such lines.
In keeping with recent SACPAN tradition, we will follow a “10/10” format: ten minutes for presentation and ten minutes for questions and discussion with the audience. This gives each presenter a chance to advance a core idea, receive an equal amount of time for feedback, and maximize participation. It also allows us to ensure that each individual paper gets feedback. Given the format, we particularly welcome presentations on work in progress that would benefit from substantive feedback.
The conference will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3, 2018, and will feature keynote addresses by Ruby Lal and Gyanendra Pandey of Emory University and, in the evenings, film screenings and Director talkbacks with Punjabi language filmmaker, Gurvinder Singh. Meals will be provided during the days of the conference, with one conference dinner. We will provide limited travel/lodging support for graduate student participants from outside BC’s lower mainland (the amount available will be determined by pending funding applications). We will inform students about the status of such support along with notification of acceptance.
To apply for participation, please send a short abstract (150 words) and a bio (100 words) to CISAR cisar.iar@ubc.ca with the subject line “SACPAN Proposal” by November 30, 2017. Please include details of your affiliation and student enrolment status (institution, degree program, year of study) if you wish to be considered for a travel grant. We will send notification of acceptances (and travel grants) in early January 2018.
